Gabe wanted to join the rally today but he was flying off tonight so couldn't take the risk just in case kena lokap! Friends of ours who joined the rally said it restored their faith a little in 1Malaysia and hopefully, this marks a new step for our country. It seemed a bit surreal to see all the images online and reading the tweets on the rally. Our government does seem to be a laughing joke and using unnecessary violence to scare the rakyat. The older generation who survived May 13 was worried of history repeating itself but thankfully, nothing of that sort happened. Still, to be safe, there was a lot of people stocking up on supplies yesterday night (yours truly included!)

The police blocked almost all entrances to KL and mount crazy amounts of roadblocks, checking every car that is headed to town. Some parts of the roads were so clear today it was almost eerie! But the people demonstrated, the police responded with tear gas and water cannons and more than 1,000 people were arrested. I just hope that there were no death resulting from this rally.

Turning 5 in Singapore

Ever since we made up our minds to try celebrating our anniversary in different places, fate had it that I had an event in Singapore on our anniversary so Gabe came to celebrate with me in Singapore. It was a simple affair as I was dead tired after the event as usual.

Gabe was tasked with finding our dinner place and he did not disappoint. We went to Wild Honey in Mandarin Gallery where they served variations of 'breakfasty' food and it was really good :) We then walked around Orchard for a bit before heading back to the hotel where the lovely people at Ritz-Carlton surprised us with a bottle of Moet and strawberries and cream :)

And then, Gabe watched tennis while I crashed! :)

Counting our blessings today and for always.

We ate, we slept, we did absolutely nothing!

Here we are on Day 4 of our veggie-fying holiday in our favourite island, Langkawi waiting for our plane to whisk us back to reality. And by veggie, I don't mean it literally, more the state of mind n our actions.

This is by far the most relaxing holiday we had in a while where we didn't have any set itinerary and were able to do whatever we wanted, whenever. Needless to say, that was simply perfect!

We managed some touristy stuff like going up the cable car (which was very high!!!) n going island hopping n basking under the sun. Just the right amount of activity if you ask me. I also treated myself to a spa since they were having a 40% off promo! Couldn't resist!

Combine all the above with some yummylicious Malay and seafood, you have the recipe of my perfect holiday! It was great to be able to take time off and just enjoy each other's company, catching the sunset n just being together. :)

It indeed was lovely n thank you hubby for having the foresight of buying the tix for this holiday. It couldn't have come at a better time! :)

Our latest addition to the family - a little terrier/schnauzer who has brought much smiles to our family! Since we live in an apartment, she's currently living at Gabe's parents place and bringing the house down with her antics! :)

Wow... in a blink of an eye, we said goodbye to 2010 and welcomed 2011... So much has happened in the last year but we hardly had time to reflect and review...anyhow, till we have time to do that, we attach our 'Tay's New Year Updates 2011' for a quick update on what we've been up to the last year.

Happy New Year everyone and may 2011 be a great year for all of us - filled with love, peace, joy, friendship, laughter and happiness. Hugs to all from the Tays.

Tay's New Year Updates 2011

Happy New Year! :) Hope you and your family had a blessed Christmas together.

2010 for the Tay's have been relatively uneventful and sad to say, it revolved mainly around our work schedule. Wen Sze is still working at OSK Investment Bank and her role in organising regional events have seen her traveling quite a bit this year. She went to Singapore and Hong Kong 4 times respectively and once each to Phuket, Cambodia and Kota Kinabalu. Needless to say, it was exciting at the beginning of the year but by the time October came around, she was ready to crash (which she did coz she got really sick then!) Having said that, she is still enjoying her work very much and is familiarising herself with all the banking/investment lingo.

Gabriel is still working with World Vision and he also went for a 2+ weeks training stint to Monrovia, California where he enjoyed himself very much. He managed to participate in the Malibu Half Marathon which he enjoyed tremendously as it was a very scenic run by the famed Malibu beaches. He also had his first taste of an American Thanksgiving celebration and a small taste of the Black Friday sales :) before heading back home.

Holiday wise, we only managed 2 short trips this year - the first trip to the tranquil Lake Kenyir, in a state of Terengganu where we had a taste of fishing and basically enjoying nature and the other trip was to the busy metropolitan Singapore a couple weeks ago to celebrate Wen Sze's birthday and also for Gabriel to run the Singapore half marathon. Gabriel is a real running enthusiast and this year, he completed 20 runs + 2 climbs altogether! Can't say the same for Wen Sze :)

We are still very much involved in our church - Petaling Jaya Gospel Hall where Gabriel teaches Sunday School and Wen Sze helps out with the youth and music committee. The music committee is in the midst of compiling a new songbook so Wen Sze's weekends is spent proof-reading lyrics and collating music sheets. :) We are also part of a care group which caters to the 20s-30s age group and we've been really blessed by the friendships formed in this care group. Gabriel will still stay on in Sunday School for 2011 but Wen Sze will be taking a short break from youth due to her hectic schedule.

We foresee that 2011 will be much similar to 2010 work-wise and Gabriel may also be travelling more but we hope to be able to take some time out to spend time together and with that, we have already booked our next holiday in March to our favourite island in Malaysia - Langkawi. It's an island with a lot of special memories for the both of us and also where we took our wedding pictures and honeymooned so it would be great to go back after all this years!

Found it interesting that Gabe and I are both travelling today. I'm in Phnom Penh enroute to Siem Reap while my dear husband is halfway across the sea in Hong Kong enroute to LA where he'll be for the next three weeks for training. I am very much jealous that I couldn't join him but am also very excited that he gets this opportunity to train overseas and also to run in the Malibu marathon!

Life around us has revolved much around work the last couple of months especially for Wens who have been traveling every couple of weeks from July. But we're both looking forward to our first trip away together in December to Singapore where we'll be celebrating Wens' birthday as well as Gabe to run his Singapore marathon...

On Aug 31, we went on a day outing to visit the Elephant Sanctuary in Kuala Gandah with some friends and friends of friends, stopping by Bentong for some good food. It was quite a fun group and pretty cool that we made the trip in a 6-car convoy... We also indulged in some good Bentong porky goodness, the famed Kow Po ice cream and of course, for the durian lovers, they indulged in Bentong durians (though they were stuffed to the brim!) Overall, it was a really enjoyable trip..

Once Every Four Years...

The phenomenon is none other than the World Cup!

And if the games are happening in a different continent from your home country, you'll see a lot more panda eyes at work...which is what I envision at work tomorrow since most people are up watching the Spain vs Holland final as I type at 3 am in the morning. I foresee a lot of MCs tomorrow! :)

World Cup season is always very special for us because it always reminds me of the time we got married. It can almost be seen as a World Cup anniversary for us as we got married in 2006 and I remember our dinner was held on a quarter-final night. But the thing I remember most was how our friend, Eugene, sent us the World Cup schedule way in advance just so we can plan our wedding dates around it! Thoughtful of him, but no we didn't plan our wedding around it! So yeah, World Cup brings back many good memories.

And now, let me get my attention back to the TV. Ole ole Espana!

Trip to Kenyir

Gabe and I made a short trip to Lake Kenyir with Benny & Lareina sometime in May. It was such a perfect, relaxing break and it was our first holiday after coming back from London and we really enjoyed ourselves. The trip was soon forgotten in all the busyness that followed but this video sure brought back good memories! There was a 30km blackout radius at Kenyir on Day Two and we had to travel to the next big town for KFC! :) Thankfully, the electricity was back when we got back to the hotel after that.

4 years and counting...

Gabe and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary today. I had to work in the morning but managed to get the afternoon off so we decided to head up to Genting (the only place near enough to get to and back within the same day!) Gabe also surprised me with a bouquet of beautiful purple roses, delivered to my office, much to the envy of my colleagues. Quite shy la to carry it down the lift! :)

We enjoyed a leisurely dinner, a walk around enjoying the cool air, wasting a couple ringgit in the slot machines and watching serious gamblers part with their hard-earned money. We ended the night with mug a hot coffee and red velvet cake at our all-time favourite Coffee Bean in Resort Hotel. It was the most stress-free anniversary and we really just enjoyed each other's company, no big expectations. Here's looking forward to more happy years together! :) Love you hubby dearest!

I think we might make it a point to go somewhere for our anniversary. Besides our first anniversary where we celebrated in Sheraton Subang (since we had a free meal courtesy of them!), we were in Brugge and Brussels on our 2nd anniversary and last year, we celebrated in Monaco and Nice. So hmm, next year Pangkor Laut? :)

a year ago exactly, we were in Venice when we heard that Michael Jackson had died. Then we continued traveling and didn't see or hear anything till we watched the funeral on TV in Portugal. Today, I heard the Michael Jackson tribute show on the radio on the way to work, commemorating the first year anniversary of his death. I couldn't help but think of all the changes in the past year and I still can't quite believe that a whole year had actually passed!

A year later, so much has changed (for us at least):

Last year, we were footloose and fancy free... this year, we are saddled with numerous responsibilities and commitments.

Last year, we were soaking it up under the sun....this year, we're just trying to escape the heat and rain.

Last year, we were both out of a job....this year, we're both working very hard

Last year, we were nomads....this year, we are settlers

Sometimes when work gets me down, I always wished we could go back to London and live it all over again...Kinda not accepting 'real life' that well I guess, always wishing for an escape route but one thing always remains...I'm just so glad we got the opportunity to do what we did in London and till this day, I think we will always have fond memories of our time there and really, it does just feel like a grand ol' dream... one year ago.

Wrote this a while back in 2009 but we never finished it and sent it to our friends so here are our updates completed, 3 months into 2010. :P

Another year whizzed by and a new year beckons. 2009 was an adventurous year for us and one that was filled with changes. The most important being that we have returned to Malaysia for good after our 2-year stint in the UK. We decided to return home after not hearing about the work permit from Gabriel’s company and since Air Asia X was having a really good promotion at that time, we decided to purchase our return tickets home. That was in February.

In the subsequent months, we made the most of our time in the UK and planned our mega curtain-call backpacking trip round Europe. We both finished work in May and shortly after, made a road trip to Manchester via Oxford with some friends. It was a lovely trip together where we were introduced to the sinful goodness of a fried Mars bar! It's basically taking a Mars chocolate bar, dipping it into Fish & Chip batter and deep frying it. Gabe, being the sweet-tooth guy absolutely loved it.

We then embarked on our 40-day backpacking trip round Europe starting in Krakow, Poland down through central/eastern Europe, Greece, then back up to Italy and all the way across to Portugal. A little bit too ambitious I would say but hey, we wanted to visit all these places and this was to be our curtain call! It was a very tiring trip but oh-so-fulfilling. We never imagined we could visit so many places at a go and the sights, smells and experiences were sometimes overwhelming. Seeing all the different languages, cultures, food throughout those regions were an eye-opener and it truly was an awesome trip. Wearing the same clothes for more than a month however, was also not very fun especially for Wen Sze.

Some memorable highlights from the trip include going white-water rafting in beautiful Slovenia, hiking in the Tatras Mountain in Poland, watching the most spectacular sunsets in Santorini, traveling by ferry for 34 hours from Greece to Venice, celebrating our anniversary by the French Riviera, gawking at Gaudi’s masterpieces in Barcelona, escaping the immense 46 celcius heat in Sevilla and finally, eating Portuguese egg tarts in Lisbon.

It was a dream come true and more to be able to travel and see the world together. We were grateful that nothing untoward happened to us during the trip considering that our belongings were just literally in our rucksacks and we took numerous flights, night trains, long train journeys with many connections, buses and ferries throughout the trip. We kept track of all the traveling times and we calculated that we ended up spending a whole week just sitting in trains, buses, ferries etc in the 40-days! That's what happens when you are too ambitious with the itinerary! :)

Upon returning to London in July, we had just enough time (and money!!) to make a last trip to Scotland to visit our friends as well as to fulfill Gabe’s dream of climbing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in UK. It certainly was a grueling hike especially for not-so-fit Wen Sze but after 9 hours up and down (+sore thighs and calves as proof), we are proud to say that we’ve conquered Ben Nevis.

Before you knew it, it was time for us to pack up 2 years of our lives into 3 boxes and several luggages and we bid a sad farewell to the place we’ve called home for 2 years. Would we do it all over again? Most definitely YES! We can’t begin to count the many blessings that we’ve been blessed in our 2 years in London and the whole experience has definitely made our relationship stronger. Learning to depend on each other was truly a lesson well-learned in our time there.

We came back to KL in August and soon after, Wen Sze found a job at OSK Investment Bank in their communications department and she was put right to work organising events and also assisting in media relations. She also got to travel to Singapore & Phuket for work in January and will be traveling more in the coming months. Gabriel started work in World Vision in their global IT support team where he is also working with the same team from The Edge previously. Both of us are enjoying our new jobs and workplaces and we are also counting our blessings for securing a job so quickly.

With jobs in place, everything else seem to fall into place and before long, it feels as if we never left. We're back actively serving in the church; Gabe in Sunday School and IT and Wens in Youth Fellowship and the Music & Drama ministry. We were also happy to be back for our church's 50th Anniversary celebration since we missed out on the new church dedication service in 2007.

It truly has been an amazing year and we're not sure just quite what 2010 will bring, but I think we are ready to settle down in one place for the moment. Our wanderlust has been satisfied to a certain extent in our 2 years abroad but we are now keen to travel and discover the secrets of South East Asia destinations. :) In the meantime, we are enjoying the 'normal life' for the moment.

A decade together

Wow.

It's been TEN years since we got together.

That feels like forever but then again, it also feels like it hasn't really been that long.

When I look back at memories past, it just amazes me to think how far we have come in this 10 years. Here are some of the things/experiences that we've been blessed with in the 10 years together:

Surviving the LDR for 3 years!
Gabe giving me a surprise visit for my graduation in St Cloud. We also traveled to Lake Superior and my fave city of all times, San Francisco.
Working, saving up, buying our apartment, furnishing our apartment.
Gabe proposed on Valentine's Day in 2005 and we got married on 1 July 2006.
Blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime by embarking on the 2 years working holiday programme in the UK.
Traveling, traveling and more traveling!
Amazing, amazing times together in the UK and Europe - camping, hiking, traveling, eating, shopping, cooking, surviving. Great times!
Embarking on a 40-days backpacking trip round Europe...
Taking a 37-hours ferry ride from Greece to Italy...
Watching Arsenal play live...
And coming back home to live, work and get on with life...

Indeed, we have been blessed with many opportunities and seeing our dreams come true. It hasn't always been a bed of roses, but we hold true to the saying that there is a silver lining behind every cloud and as long as we both try to work things out as they come along, that's all good I suppose. :)

Workplace

I really enjoyed having dinner with Gabriel and his colleagues at their company's CNY dinner on Saturday. It really was a nice gesture inviting the spouses and introducing us to their company and the colleagues whom our spouses worked with. And seeing the people that my hubby works with really puts me at ease. :)

My first response to Gabe after dinner was, "Wah, your company very Christian hor!". Kind of a 'DUH!" response considering it IS a Christian-based NGO but I guess hearing about it and experiencing and seeing it for yourself are two separate things. I never thought that there could be such a 'positive' work environment and I could really see the difference of having Christ in the middle of the workplace and am very happy for Gabriel. Most importantly, I can see how happy he is working at World Vision so more power to you dear! :)

Wow. It's been 2 months since we last checked in. A lot has happened in the last two months. Here are some significant happenings:

Gabriel has started work in World Vision in their Global IT support department. He is back at work with his same team from The Edge and he's enjoying it very much. He has also recently joined a running team called the Miracle Milers and is enjoying his runs very much. He participated in 3 runs thus far including a full marathon on the Penang Bridge.

Wen Sze was busy with planning her brother's wedding which was held on her birthday. After that, she continued her busy spell by helping out the Sunday School performance for Christmas and is now busy memorising her script for a short skit for Watchnight Service. Work wise, she is also getting busier by the day organising an event that will be held in Singapore in January. So unfortunately, unlike her colleagues and friends who can say they are on leave till next year, she is back slogging away at work.

With the exception of a few dented items squashed in the box, everything arrived in one piece! Woo hoo! Now we just have to figure out how to store all these goodies in our already compact (Read: FULL OF STUFF) home! :)

Back in the rat race

It’s my second week at work and man does it feel good to be working. It has been an extremely busy first week last week. It was just manic from the word go but it sure feels good to be using the brains and wearing all the lovely office wear and looking all professional. Working in the corporate communications department (in an investment bank nonetheless) is very different from an agency. So far, it’s quite nice being on this side of the fence. It’s not just all about media relations but we also get to organise events, prepare for visits, open houses etc. So far so good. The colleagues are a really fun bunch and it’s been really fun learning the ropes from them. Of course, being that it is a much larger institution, there are also a lot more red tapes to adhere to and that definitely takes some getting used to but all is good thus far…

The husband on the other hand is still looking for work and is enjoying his time out with a few of our friends who coincidentally are jobless at the moment. I guess this is payback time for all the times I was a tai-tai watching TVB serials in London so now my dear hubby is enjoying being a house husband. Well, all that matters is one of us has a job because job = pay = bills paid = less worry = happy family! :P

Officially part of the family

My brother and KY had their registration on 3rd October 2009 so my brother is now officially a married man and we have a tai so in the house! Woo hoo… It was a pretty interesting experience as they got registered at Thean Hou Temple but I was quite impressed with the whole efficiency of the process. They told my brother that his time was around 12 pm and true to their word, their turn arrived exactly at noon. Not bad, not bad at all. Gabriel was also very happy as he was the unofficial photographer so our friend was happily shooting with his new flash. I have to say, he did take some really lovely shots so well done dear! Congratulations Ko and Chanttal! Wishing you all the happiness in the world as you begin your lives together.

Cherating-a-gallivanting

Last week, we made an impromptu overnight trip with some friends to Kuantan and man did we have a blast. It was a pretty relaxing trip and we stayed in a large bungalow suite by the beach so that was pretty cool listening to the breeze and waves at night. We also ate like pigs, stopping by all the famous food in Kuantan and Kemaman. My tummy unfortunately (or fortunately!) wasn't feeling too good so had to take it easy. Overall, a lovely trip catching up with friends, yummylicious food and competitive bingo and taboo game sessions :) Thanks you all for a wonderful time!

Tweety finally started singing and what a beautiful sound it is... It seems that we are quite lucky that he started singing only after about 10 days with us. According to Gabe's uncle, some canaries only start singing after a month with their new owner. Well, our baby sings and he'll only get stronger. Here's a preview for you guys :)

So, we've been home for the past month or so and what have we been up to?

EATING
We've been catching up on our favourite food, so much so that Gabriel was taken ill a couple weeks back and I am still recovering from a bout of food poisoning from Saturday's nasi lemak. But you're really not Malaysian if you don't miss the food. We just keep reminding ourselves that we can take it easy since we're back for good :)

Despite the heat, haze, unrelentless sneezing and allergic reactions, it's good to be home among family and friends. There's really no place like home! :)

Crazy little thing called love

After hearing so much about this play - from hearing about the practices from Colin during our road trip in Scotland to hearing about them winning the Boh Camerionian awards, we finally got to watch it and man was it worth the wait. We had to drive to Seremban to catch it as their Klang Valley performances had ended by the time we got back.

Funny, hard-hitting, poignant, entertaining are all apt words to describe the different sketches. Footstool players had outdone themselves again and I'm glad we went to catch it with our moms. :) Here are some photos I took from my 'front-row' seat :)

Happy 50th Anniversary Petaling Jaya Gospel Hall

We came back just in time to celebrate our church's 50th anniversary with our fellow church members. Just in time to be roped into doing some kuli work too since we belong to the 'jobless' group. :) We're not complaining, it's good to be able to serve. The celebration went smoothly and everything looked perfect. It reminded me of a wedding somewhat. Kekeke.. The video was done superbly and the commemorative book was lovely too. Amazing time. Thanking God for His faithfulness over the last 50 years. He is truly Lord of the Years.

Just thought of starting a new blog for when we return to Malaysia, our tanahair tercinta. So was just thinking of names for the blog and since tays.blogspot.com wasn't available so thought of just 'chup-ing' this name for if we do go on with it.

This is just a note to start off the new blog. :)

It's now 27th July 2009, 1.23 a.m. and Gabriel is having his late night supper and we're still living in London, with a very messy house as we are now in the midst of packing up the two years of our lives into 3 cardboard boxes and 3 suitcases...
